Torque vs Horsepower: What’s the Difference?

Torque is how hard an engine twists; horsepower is how fast it does that work. The difference, the formula with an example, and which matters for towing and speed.

Torque is how hard an engine twists. Horsepower is how fast it can keep doing that work. Torque is a force — the push you feel in your back when you step on the gas. Horsepower is torque multiplied by engine speed, so it tells you how much work the engine can do per second, and how fast the car can go.

What is torque in a car?

Torque is rotational force: how hard the engine turns the crankshaft. In the US it’s measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) — one pound of force on a one-foot lever. Elsewhere it’s newton-meters (Nm); 1 lb-ft is about 1.36 Nm.

In a car, torque is what gets you moving and pulls you up a hill or a trailer behind you. An engine makes different torque at different rpm, which is why spec sheets say “300 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm.”

What is horsepower?

Horsepower is the rate of doing work: torque at a given rpm. One horsepower is 33,000 pound-feet of work per minute. The more torque an engine makes at high rpm, the more horsepower it has — and the higher the top speed and the harder it keeps accelerating as speed rises. 1 hp is about 0.746 kW.

The horsepower formula

Horsepower = Torque (lb-ft) × RPM ÷ 5,252

Example: an engine making 300 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm makes 300 × 4,000 ÷ 5,252 = about 228 hp at that rpm.

The 5,252 comes from the definition of horsepower (33,000) divided by 2π. It’s also why torque and horsepower curves always cross at 5,252 rpm when they’re drawn on the same scale.

To get torque from horsepower: Torque = HP × 5,252 ÷ RPM.

Torque vs horsepower at a glance

Torque Horsepower
What it is Twisting force Work per unit of time (torque × rpm)
US unit lb-ft hp
You feel it as Push off the line, pull at low rpm Acceleration at speed, top speed
Matters most for Towing, hauling, city driving Highway passing, track, top speed
Typical strong engines Diesels, turbo engines High-revving engines

Which matters more: torque or horsepower?

It depends on what you do with the car:

  • Towing and hauling: torque at low rpm. That’s why diesel trucks with modest horsepower tow heavy trailers — they make big torque low in the rev range.
  • Daily driving: a broad torque curve. A turbo engine that makes its torque from low rpm feels strong in traffic even with less peak horsepower.
  • Acceleration and top speed: horsepower. Gearing multiplies torque at the wheels, so the engine that makes more power across the rev range wins as speed rises.

Peak numbers don’t tell the whole story. The shape of the curves — where the torque comes in and how long it lasts — is what you feel. A dyno chart shows it. What is a dyno? WHP vs HP →

Why diesels have so much torque

Diesels have long strokes, high compression and turbochargers, and they run at low rpm. That gives huge torque but a low redline — and since horsepower is torque × rpm, their horsepower stays moderate. Diesel tuner →

What a tune does to torque and horsepower

A tune raises both, but how much of each depends on the engine. On a turbo engine the tune can raise boost in the mid-range, so torque often rises much more than peak horsepower. On our dyno tests with Monte:

Car Engine Horsepower Torque
Mercedes C300 2.0 turbo +25.1 hp +72.2 lb-ft
Ford F-150 Raptor 3.5 EcoBoost (turbo) +21 hp +31 lb-ft
Nissan 370Z 3.7 V6 +22.3 hp +16.8 lb-ft
Mazda MX-5 2.0 +16.6 hp +17.1 lb-ft

FAQ

What is the difference between torque and horsepower? Torque is the engine’s twisting force; horsepower is how fast it delivers that force (torque × rpm ÷ 5,252).

What does torque do in a car? It gets the car moving and pulls it up hills or with a load. You feel it as the push when you accelerate from low speed.

Is more torque or more horsepower better? For towing and low-speed pull, torque. For acceleration at speed and top speed, horsepower. For daily driving, a broad torque curve matters most.

How do you calculate horsepower from torque? Horsepower = torque (lb-ft) × rpm ÷ 5,252. For example, 300 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm is about 228 hp.

What does lb-ft mean? Pound-feet: one pound of force applied on a one-foot lever. It’s the US unit for torque.

Why do torque and horsepower cross at 5,252 rpm? Because horsepower = torque × rpm ÷ 5,252. At exactly 5,252 rpm the two numbers are equal.
