Short answer: most plug-in “fuel savers” don’t work. A device that changes the engine calibration can change consumption, but not by the 20–35% the ads promise, and anyone selling one should tell you whether their figure was measured.
Why most fuel savers don’t work
The typical “OBD fuel saver” is a small plug with a blinking light. There is no calibration inside, so there is nothing that could change how much fuel the engine burns. Other “savers” are magnets on the fuel line, tablets for the tank or vortex inserts for the intake; independent tests of these have not shown meaningful savings. If a device claims big savings on any car without knowing your engine, that tells you what it is.
What can actually change fuel consumption
The engine computer decides how much fuel to inject and when to fire the spark. Changing that calibration can change consumption — in either direction. A tune written for power usually uses more fuel when you use the power. A calibration written for economy can use less in steady, light driving.
The rest is the same as it always was: tyre pressure, speed, idling, weight on the roof and your right foot usually matter more than any device.
What Monte can and can’t tell you
Monte has an Eco mode: a calibration for your exact engine aimed at lower consumption in steady, light-throttle driving. Our target for it is up to 5%. That is a target — it has not been independently measured yet, and we won’t call it a result until it has.
One owner’s experience: a Ford Taurus 3.5 EcoBoost owner reported that his city mileage went from about 18 to about 22 mpg after installing Monte. That is his own estimate, not a controlled measurement, and one car is not a rule. We mention it because it is what an owner told us, not because you should expect the same.
If fuel is your main reason to buy, ask us about your car first — and measure your own mileage over several full tanks before and after, on the same routes.
How to judge any fuel-saving claim
- Is it written for your engine? A device that works the same on every car can’t change fuelling.
- Was the figure measured, and by whom? “Up to 35%” without a test is marketing.
- Can you check it yourself? Fill-to-fill over several tanks is the simplest honest test.
