Torque is how hard an engine twists. Horsepower is how fast it can keep doing that work.<\/strong> Torque is a force \u2014 the push you feel in your back when you step on the gas. Horsepower is torque multiplied by engine speed, so it tells you how much work the engine can do per second, and how fast the car can go.<\/p>\n

What is torque in a car?<\/h2>\n

Torque is rotational force: how hard the engine turns the crankshaft. In the US it\u2019s measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) \u2014 one pound of force on a one-foot lever. Elsewhere it\u2019s newton-meters (Nm); 1 lb-ft is about 1.36 Nm.<\/p>\n

In a car, torque is what gets you moving and pulls you up a hill or a trailer behind you. An engine makes different torque at different rpm, which is why spec sheets say \u201c300 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is horsepower?<\/h2>\n

Horsepower is the rate of doing work: torque at a given rpm. One horsepower is 33,000 pound-feet of work per minute. The more torque an engine makes at high rpm, the more horsepower it has \u2014 and the higher the top speed and the harder it keeps accelerating as speed rises. 1 hp is about 0.746 kW.<\/p>\n

Example: an engine making 300 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm makes 300 \u00d7 4,000 \u00f7 5,252 = about 228 hp at that rpm.<\/p>\n

The 5,252 comes from the definition of horsepower (33,000) divided by 2\u03c0. It\u2019s also why torque and horsepower curves always cross at 5,252 rpm when they\u2019re drawn on the same scale.<\/p>\n

To get torque from horsepower: Torque = HP \u00d7 5,252 \u00f7 RPM.<\/p>\n
