A tune changes how your car\u2019s engine computer (ECU) runs the engine.<\/strong> It adjusts how much fuel is injected, when the spark plugs fire, and on turbo engines how much boost the turbo makes. No parts change \u2014 the same engine runs on different instructions, and that\u2019s where the extra power comes from.<\/p>\n

What is a car tune?<\/h2>\n

Every car leaves the factory with a calibration: tables (maps) in the ECU that say how much fuel and how much ignition advance to use at every rpm and load. The factory writes them to cover everything at once \u2014 poor fuel, extreme climates, hundreds of thousands of miles, emissions targets \u2014 so they leave margin.<\/p>\n

Tuning a car means changing those tables to use part of that margin for more power and torque. People also say \u201ctune\u201d for the calibration itself (\u201cI put a tune on it\u201d) and for the device or file that carries it.<\/p>\n
