WHP vs HP, Explained

Every tuner on the market promises more horsepower. A dyno is how you find out whether that is true. Here is what a dyno measures, why its numbers look lower than the factory rating, and how to read a before-and-after result without being fooled.

What Is a Dyno?

A dyno (short for dynamometer) is a machine that measures how much torque a vehicle makes, and from torque and engine speed calculates horsepower. The car is strapped down, run through the gears to full throttle, and the dyno records the force at every rpm. The result is a curve, not just a peak number: you see where the power comes in, where it peaks and where it falls off.

Shops use dynos to tune engines, check repairs and prove gains. For a buyer, a dyno run is the simplest honest test of any performance product: the same car, the same machine, before and after.

Types of dyno

There are two families, and they measure in different places.

Type

Where it measures

What it tells you

Engine dyno

At the crankshaft, with the engine out of the car

The engine’s own output — the figure carmakers publish

Chassis dyno

At the wheels or hubs, with the whole car on the machine

What actually reaches the road, after the transmission and axles

Chassis dynos come in a few designs:

Inertia roller dynos (for example Dynojet): the wheels spin a heavy drum; power is calculated from how fast the drum speeds up.

Load-bearing roller dynos (for example Mustang): the rollers can add resistance, so the shop can hold the car at a set speed or load — useful for tuning.

Hub dynos (for example Dynapack): the wheels come off and the machine bolts to the hubs, so there is no tyre slip on a roller.

Almost every number you see from a tuning shop or an owner’s forum post comes from a chassis dyno. That matters for the next section.

WHP vs HP: wheel vs crank horsepower

HP in a carmaker’s spec sheet is crank horsepower: what the engine makes on an engine dyno, before the transmission. WHP is wheel horsepower: what a chassis dyno measures after the power has gone through the gearbox, driveshaft, differential and tyres. Each of those parts uses some power as friction and heat, so WHP is always lower than the rated HP.

How much lower depends on the car — the drivetrain, manual or automatic, two- or all-wheel drive — and on the dyno. A real example: when Road & Track put a Ford Mustang Dark Horse, rated at 500 hp, on four dynos in 2026, three of them read 421 to 431 whp — about 14–16% below the rating. The fourth read 465 whp.

So if your car is rated at 300 hp and a dyno shows 255 whp, nothing is wrong with it. The two numbers measure different things.

What this means when you compare figures:

Compare WHP with WHP, not with the factory rating.

Some shops convert WHP back to crank HP with a fixed percentage. That is an estimate, not a measurement — ask which number you are looking at.

Why two dynos give different numbers

The same car, on the same day, can read tens of horsepower apart on two dynos. In the Road & Track test above, the spread between the highest and lowest reading was 44 whp. Three things cause most of it:

The machine. Roller, load-bearing and hub dynos measure differently, and each model has its own characteristics. The shop running the highest-reading dyno in that test said itself that it reads higher than a Dynojet.

Weather correction. Engines make more power in cool, dense air. Dyno software corrects every run to standard conditions so runs on different days can be compared — but there is more than one standard. Switching the correction standard alone can move the number noticeably, so check which one a printout uses (SAE is the common conservative choice).

The setup. Tyre pressure, how tightly the car is strapped, engine temperature and which gear the pull is made in all move the result.

The practical rule: a single dyno number on its own tells you little. A before-and-after on the same dyno tells you a lot.

How to read a before-and-after result

When a seller shows you a dyno gain, ask five questions:

Same car, same dyno, same day? Anything else compares two different measurements.

Is the source named? A shop, a lab, a video of the run — not just a screenshot of a graph.

WHP or crank HP? And if crank, was it measured or converted?

Which correction standard? It should be the same for both runs.

Is the gain believable? On a stock car, a plug-in or software tune typically adds a moderate amount; turbo engines gain the most because boost can be raised. “35% on any car” is not a dyno result.

What our dyno results show

Every Monte figure we publish is a before-and-after on the same machine, with the source named:

Car

Engine

Gain

Source

Ford F-150 Raptor

3.5 EcoBoost

+21 hp, +31 lb-ft

Lab test, SEMA Garage, Diamond Bar, CA

Mercedes C300

2.0 turbo

+25.1 hp, +72.2 lb-ft

Dyno on video

Nissan 370Z

3.7 V6

+22.3 hp, +16.8 lb-ft

Dynocom customer dyno report

Abarth 595

1.4 T-Jet

+20.6 hp, +13.7 lb-ft

Dyno on video

Mazda MX-5

2.0

+16.6 hp, +17.1 lb-ft

Dynocom customer dyno report

The gains are real and moderate — 16 to 25 horsepower, not 80. For other cars, the figures on our site are estimates from the factory ratings, not dyno runs of your car. Check what Monte adds to your engine →

What about the “virtual dyno” on the Monte GTR?

The Monte GTR shows a power and torque reading on its screen. It is calculated from engine data the car reports, using a model of your engine — a useful way to compare runs on your own car, but not a measurement like a chassis dyno. For a number you can quote, use a real dyno.

What a dyno session costs

A few measurement pulls are usually the cheapest service a dyno shop offers. A tuning session is billed by the hour and costs much more, because the car stays on the dyno while the calibration is changed. Prices vary a lot by shop and region, so call ahead and ask:

how many pulls are included,

whether you get a printout or file of each run,

which correction standard they use.

If you are testing a product, book the before and after runs at the same shop, ideally on the same day. For more on how tunes differ, see Stage 1 vs. stage 2 tune.

FAQ

What is a dyno? A machine that measures a vehicle’s torque and calculates horsepower across the rpm range. An engine dyno measures at the crankshaft; a chassis dyno measures at the wheels.

What is the difference between WHP and HP? HP (crank horsepower) is measured at the engine; WHP (wheel horsepower) is measured at the wheels after the drivetrain. WHP is always lower — often by around 15%, depending on the car and the dyno.

Why did my car dyno lower than its rating? Because the rating is crank horsepower and the dyno measured wheel horsepower. Compare WHP with WHP.

How do I know if a tuner really adds power? Ask for a before-and-after on the same dyno, with the source and correction standard named.
